I have an antivirus but I dont think its working?

I have an anti virus(AOL active virus shield) but i don't know weather it is working or not.first it was working properly it detects all the threats.but now I think that it is not doing its work properly.Even now when I sit on my computer some programs does not work properly.what can I do to fix the problem.

And please suggest me some good and free anti virus programs.

Active Virus Shield is an excellent anti-virus that uses the same engine as the top rated (and expensive) Kaspersky Anti-Spyware.

You can test if virus detection is working by downloading the Eicar Test Virus (it's harmless).

BTW, some have suggested AVG as an alternative. Well...

AVG Free is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
