Question about antivirus programs?

I was recommended to install Norton Anti virus on my computer but my friends say it's bad and it dramatically slows down my computer.

Any recommendations on a free anti virus program that works really well or even one that you have to pay for that's definitly worth the money. I've heard there are many programs out there that are better then Norton. What Anti virus programs are better and more productive?

Norton and McAffe are packed with extra crap that will hog resources. They need to check off all those squares on the back of the box so Office Max customers will choose it. Also they are the most popular, so many viruses look for them first and try to disable them.
