The last Dell computer I had - I upgraded my subscription after the first 45 free days for another 24 months, mainly because I was very impressed with McAfee.

With this Dell computer I got McAfee for 15mths pre-installed, and I'm still impressed with it.

CommWarrior is a whole family of viruses for Symbian S60 R2 phones, containing about a couple of dosen variants. However, what you most probably have is either the first three (A, B or C) or the Q variant - they are the most widespread ones.

If you have the A, B or C variant, install the free utility pointed by the first of the two links below - it will remove the virus.

If you can boot into your PC I would suggest running any diagnostic tests that came pre-installed with your machine. Particularly system checks like your motherboard, and of course especially the CPU. You may have a hardware issue here. You can check to see if your CPU fan is not clogged with dust or otherwise not keeping it cool as it might be overheating. Sometimes it can be something that simple.

Personally i don't really go for freeware,however,if you're looking for a good av freeware, id recommend AntiVir by Avira.

Also spybot is great to have... yes it is more anti-spyware and not anti-virus although it does have some immunizations against things the AV would consider a virus. With AVG and spybot in combo there isnt much that can stop you.

I have had enough! I accidently downloaded this malicious program and it wont remove. It doesnt show up on Add/Remove Programs or in my Search. You need one firewall, one antivirus, some on-demand antispyware. For a firewall I would suggest either Zone Alarm free if you are rather new, or Comodo Firewall Pro if you have some computer experience (only one.):

Spyware Terminator is a free program that can get rid of spyware. Prevx1 has a 30 fully functional trial so you can install it, rid the spyware and then remove prevx1. Avast and AVG are both good antivirus products. For Ondeman Virus Scanning download and install Bitdefender 8. This has no background scaning so will not find malicious files unless you scan them manually w/ bitdefender 8. Hope this helps.

AVG is a very good anti-virus. It does miss some viruses, but then the same is true for EVERY anti-virus, be it free or cost $5000. AVG has the added advantage of being very light on your system resources, so you virtually don't feel it's presence. AVG has a free version, which is free for life. I guess you were using AVG 7.1 which expired in January this year. The latest version of AVG is 7.5, you can get the free version from

1.Always keep your anti-virus updated.

2.Always keep the real time protection or resident shield of your anti-virus on.

But I say THERE IS NO BEST. Here's why.

I use Norton... it's good. If everyone used Norton, then a new Virus could KILL us all. But if we use different anti-virus solutions, then a new virus won't WHACK us all. It just makes good sense. But check the reviews. Norton is usually rated high. McAfee is usually a bit lower. Some of the FREE solutions are not listed at the ratings, but other articles and experiences show that they are pretty good.

Well, not only will you need a firewall and at least 2 anti spyware programs, you are going to need a new Anti Virus. I would recommend uninstalling AVG, because it lets in 1 out of 5 viruses, and changing it to AntiVir. As far as a firewall, the windows firewall can't do much so get Comodo Firewall Pro.

I am helping out a friend (or at least trying) to install some anti virus so on and so forth onto their computer.

Cell phone viruses are uncommon and you likely do not have one. What you need to do is try a reboot (shut down, take out battery, wait 5 mins, put battery back in, restart). IF that doesn't work try a Master reset (most phone manuals will tell you how). That usually solves most phone problems

Avast is what I use. It's got a slicker interface than AVG, and works well for me.

The problem with Norton (aside from price) is that it can take a speedy PC and reduce it to a crawl. Both Avast and AVG are just as good as Norton and don't impact performance as much.

Comodo has an entire suite of free products, if you want to check those out as well.

Just configure them to your liking, preferrably disabling as much of the background features in AVG as possible such as E-mail and live scanning. These processes run in the background and take up resources. You don't need them if you scan regularly - maybe once a week (depending on your level of internet usage) and whenever you notice strange virus-like behavior on your system.

Be sure to use the Immunize feature with Spybot.

I don't know why you'd even be thinking about getting rid of it. I've had it 4 years with no problems. I got Norton with my last computer purchase and it missed viruses that AVG picked up. I love it, a daily update and scan when YOU want it to. You can uninstall it by going to your Control Panel and then to Add/Delete Programs.

Antivirus / computer security program -- which one is the best?

My McAfee subscription is coming to an end, (no thanks to them, they re-billed me after 2 years for $90 for a subscription continuation without asking, underhanded toolbags).

I've been quite unhappy with McAfee, I went through the Hijackthis forums a while back and found out that McAfee has missed A LOT over the years.

So now I'm on the prowl for a new anti-virus, firewall, scanner deal, you know - a security package of some sort. What should I get? There is a plethora of free software out there, what is the best? (or the best combination?) or is it better to pay for one of the major brands?

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

i have mcafee security centre i have had no problems with any threats at all all you need to do is go to their web site and you can download it from there its much cheaper than going to a retailer also if you have problems and need to down load it again their keep your details to download any of the parts you require ie anti virus or firewall etc

It is because, they are just trying to help you, get something free..Why would you want to pay, for a product, if you can get just as good a product. for free.. Avast is good enough. I use it for years. Some AntiVirus programs can not update their virus database if users log in using restricted account, but Avast does! To make your sistem more strength, you should install FireWall and Anti Spyware, and don't forget to always update your operating system. If your computer is used by several users (for example at school or cybercafe), I suggest you to install DeepFreeze.

Instead of all these "Mine is better than yours" answers that go on around here, I'll instead answer with the facts.

Looking at current protection ratings, AVG scores a lowly 90% protection against all known viruses, whilst Avast comes in at 92%. This means they are letting through roughly one in every ten viruses - pretty shocking.

Norton and McAfee are slightly better by protecting against 98.3% and circa 97% respectfully of all known viruses. However, Norton and McAfee can be known for being very heavy programs which can tend to slow down certain machines. If you are thinking of installing either of these I would definitely recommend you download their free trial to check it does not affect your machine in this way prior to opening your wallet.

If you would be interested in other Security products that are better than all of these, you should try either Prevx1, Kaspersky or F-Secure who all score over a 99% protection rating.

Out of these three my recommendation would be Prevx1, as this is the quickest at protecting against new outbreaks of malware.

The firewall is a bit difficult to get set correctly, thats my only gripe about CA.....

When I run my virus scan, the same virus Win32:Kuang2 is always detected. The options are given to delete, repair, move, scan, or move to virus chest. None of these work. The second step is to schedule a boot scan. This still does not remove the virus. I'm not sure of the next step I should take, or if there is any free software out there that could help me? Well, I suppose the best for overall protection, would be *sigh* Norton Internet Security. But dude, only get that if security, not usability is what you're looking for. Norton is such a PITA to use, and is always in your face asking some stupid question, or blocking some port so your games don't work properly, or won't allow you to file share.

The best one will be the one you like, the one you properly configure, the one you keep updated vigilantly, etc... and use with common sense and safe browsing habits.

You will know it's the best when you are not infected and it's time to renew your subscription.

There are plenty of websites that rate the programs. I would suggest you look there instead of asking people on a public board to give you what will most certainly be biased opinions or pre-made spamlists of products.

Your choice. You can empty the vault or just keep it as a POW.
It is strongly recommended that remove them from virus vault.
It will do no harm leaving them in the vault and if you find at a later date that they are needed by a program (not a virus) you can always recover them. However, you can go to the vault and delete them if you really want to.
