Is Windows Firewall safe?

I recently had to remove McAfee Security Suite, as it was causing me major problems on system resources, with my PC regularly freezing. I now have AVG free antivirus, with just Windows Firewall. I tried Zonealarm, but that slowed my PC down almost to a halt. Are there any good free firewalls that are low on system resources?

Is Windows Firewall safe?antivirus software

Windows Firewall is enough for basic protection, as it effectively checks inbound traffic. You can keep using it, but make sure that your computer doesn't have any malware infections, which can send valuable information and keystrokes to their makers (Windows firewall does nothing to check outgoing traffic, hence it cannot the malware). But you do require an anti-spyware with real time protection which will constantly monitor your computer and protect you from malware. I will recommend Windows Defender:

or

Spyware Terminator:

Also, get the free (and VERY light) McAfee Site Advisor plug-in for your Internet Explorer / Mozilla Firefox browser, it will alert you of bad sites.

Follow these and there won't be any need to switch to another firewall!

:)

Still, you may get another firewall if you aren't satisfied. I will recommend Comodo Personal Firewall, which is free yet beats all other firewalls (including non-free ones) in leak proof tests!! It is also light on your system.

Want a couple of tips on how to save and gain points??

Instead of wasting 5 points when you ask a question, use the search for questions-(green bar) at the top of this page, it is very informative.I have typed in all sorts of questions, especialy when looking for free stuff,-for example, i typed in -free antivirus programs, and it gave me all the answers, just have a pen ready and write them down.

Every time you use this facility, you save 5 points by not having to ask a question.

Another way to gain points is to search through the unresolved questions and find questions that are old but still not gone to vote, especially if you find answers that have 0 answerers.By answering these questions(even if you do not know the correct answer)you could be the only answer and get the 10 points.

Very helpful, thanks for taking the time to do this. Another hint is to always pick a correct answer, at least you get 3 points back!

HELPFUL THAT'S WHATS UP
good tips. you can also go to questions you have already answered that are in voting and pick your own answer.
that was really nice of you to waste 5 points by helping the rest of us out.
Cool
Maybe some of us truly don't care about points. But thanks for the heads up anyway darling.
I find when I start asking a question that Yahoo! brings up what it thinks are similar questions to the one that I want to ask in an attempt that if the question is there, but worded slightly different, I will look at it first before I ask it. Users should take notice of this feature.

Who knows a .....?

FREE antivirus cite thats FREE to protect your computer?

Who knows a .....?ariel

the rule of thumb

keep the virus creators gussening about ur pc security arrangements

those popular antivirus and antispyware are prime targets of virus creators

use small securities

how?

1) Use firefox with "no script", "DR.Web Antivirus Link Checker" and "flash block" plugins...

2) Use Spywareblaster for securing Internet Explorer as well as any browser u r having..

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fi...

3) Use Any Real time Anti-spyware like "widows Defender" free.

4) Never use those popular and boasting antivirus which consumes Huge memory.

My suggestion is that free versions are better than payed versions

like Antivir from http://www.avira.com

or if u wanna use a payed verson then prefer

NOD32 from http://www.nod32.com

or Kaspersky from http://www.kaspersky.com

(If u use any of these then u dont have to use any antispyware either)

Never use those big loads like norton

5) Use one or two more antispyware programs for scanning only (Not for real time protection)

6) in addition to this if u want ur system to be more secure then clean ur system on weekly basis

Use "Advanced windows care Personal" free edition of Professional the paid version form

Best of luck

My computer is in distress. It's just been overrun by spyware and possibly viruses. Help!?

I have a laptop with Windows XP Pro. I only had a free antivirus program installed. My wife recently went to a music download site and the laptop has now been completely hijacked. Internet Explorer windows start popping up as soon as I boot up. It won't connect to my wireless network and is slow as a snail. Progams are getting installed automatically and there are icons all over the desktop. I downloaded Spybot and ran several scans, but it's not helping much. Is there anything I can do short of erasing the hard drive? Is that even going to solve the problem?

Almost the same thing happened to my computer. Depending on where your wife went, it could've been just a virus site where they "pretend" to give out music. if you're downloading programs such as Spybot it won't help. sometimes those are fake. since you have mostly no programs on there, try reformating your computer, i reformated mine and it really helps! but remember to back up all of your files. Good luck!

How true it is ?

I have AVG free antivirus downloaded and working fine ,Every day when i connect to interent, It says it is updating,I m little new to computers, what is the strory behind daily updating ? does that mean that every day they find new viruses ?

How true it is ?best antivirus software

It is estimated that 150 or more new virus's are launched every month. AVG has to update on a daily basis to keep you protected from them. Be glad they are doing it that often.

How true it is ?firewall

No, it doesn't it mean it's checking your computer if you have any, everyday.
Yes DUDE ... your are right .. New Viruses and Trojans and other threat are found every day .. so your anti-virus MUST update it's virus defn. database to keep you protected with the latest threats .. i use AVG too ..

so don't worry .. let it go and grab the latest updates

hope my answer helps
No problem, an antivirus needs regular updates.

Why?

Actually, the basic method of detecting a virus is by it's name (filename or command name) and it's code( the program, or you may say, the malicious code).

If you were to detect a file, what should you do for that?

I believe, you are going to search the web and gain information about that file, like you asked this question on yahoo answers.

Then probably, you should be able to decide whether that file harmful to you or not.

If it's harmful, engineers call it a 'Virus' else you may call it whatever.

Similarly, an antivirus like AVG or NORTON or McAfee, these all have a list of known viruses, there names, activities, methods, codes etc; which all help detecting a virus.

But from where do these antivirus engines know about a file (virus / useful / else) or get a list of such virus or their respective codes??????????

A suitable answer is UPDATES. That's why, your antivirus engine is regularly updating itself to protect you from recent threats.
Yes every day!

Norton 2006 came with my BT Broadband - It is so slow - what can I do ?- Sensible Suggestions please

I had my broadband installed last Monday, and Norton 2006 was included in the package.

Before I was running on AVG free antivirus and Ad-aware. The PC was running very fast then.

I installed Norton and everything was so slow. Now it is beginning to be so slow I can't do anything without a huge delay. Even when I am typing this it appears later than what it should!

My PC has a gig RAM, and 160 gig HDD.

Any alternatives to Norton? I worried that if I uninstall it that my protection will go as I keep my PC on continuously.

Will turning to an alternative be worth my while? I just want to gain back the speed of my computer!

Norton 2006 came with my BT Broadband - It is so slow - what can I do ?- Sensible Suggestions please!?bmw

Go back to avg, or try Avast which I use. Ad Aware is what I use also. I havnt gone for the Norton AV package, and Im on BT.

Norton 2006 came with my BT Broadband - It is so slow - what can I do ?- Sensible Suggestions please!?free adware remover

I had the same problem - norton was making everything really slow and my bf took them all off last night. Today its much quicker. In add/remove their wasn't anything saying norton to remove but if you look at the properties of each thing in remove the ones with 'symantic' are the norton files. Takes ages to take them all off but its much better once they've gone. Good luck xxx
I would try uninstalling norton first and see if your pc speeds back up. If it does...just go back to AVG again. If it does not speed up, could be something else on the pc causing it and you may want to then do a full system scan.
Have a look on www.downloads.com or filehippo.com for free anti virus download to disk then symentec website for norton removal tool,Remove norton (requires restart) then load free antivirus.Aso microsoft update for defender,Anti spy ware.
BT are great for phones but their broadband package with norton is a disaster
